Top secret: Obama’s home brew recipe

seattlepi - Aug. 24, 2012

While President Obama is taking heat for classified information that leaked about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, there’s one secret the White House is closely guarding.

That’s the recipe for the president’s home brew.

Obama likes his beer, and his home brew has been the subject of much interest since he revealed that he travels with it while on the campaign trail. His beer also has been served at the White House.

Now a group of beer enthusiasts would like to know the ingredients so they can make the same beer enjoyed by the president. They started by filing a federal Freedom of Information Act request for the recipe, only to discover the White House is exempt from “FOIA” requests. So, they followed with a petition to the administration’s “We the People” site, which pledges to respond to citizen questions that gather 25,000 signatures.

It’s hard not to feel patriotic reading this petition:

“Following in the footsteps of great men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, Barack Obama has reportedly been enjoying the rewards of home brewed beer. Recent reports from news outlets like the Washington Post (August 15th, 2012) have stated that Obama has been drinking a White House home brew Honey Ale while on the campaign trail.

In keeping with the brewing traditions of the founding fathers, homebrewers across America call on the Obama Administration to release the recipe for the White House home brew so that it may be enjoyed by all.”

As of now, the petition has collected 3,708 signatures from the red, white and brew. They have until Sept. 17 gather 25,000 signatures.

Writing for  The Atlantic Wire, John Hudson shares what scant details we have about the White House ale:

What we know about the beer, which has been featured as a campaign prop during the president’s Iowa travels, is that it goes by the name White House Honey Ale. The brewski’s honey comes from Michelle Obama’s garden beehive on the south lawn and it’s bottled in a small brewery in the White House. While this is the first time it’s made its way on the campaign trail, the Honey Ale started surfacing at White House events in 2011 including the Obamas’ Super Bowl party. But that’s about all we know.

One home brewer just asked for the recipe through the White House’s Office of Public Engagement, according to this post on Reddit, the user-generated content site. The requestor makes this argument:

“The recipes for the homebrewed beers of the White House – they were developed by staff paid for by American taxpayers, correct?

As an American taxpayer, I would love to get a copy of the beers brewed at the White House so I may brew them myself. Please forward this request on to the White House brewmasters if this is possible.”
